Ticket to Ride

Acrylic on canvas, 2026
36 × 24 in.

This painting grew out of the kind of invention children create without hesitation. A cardboard box becomes an aircraft. A helmet becomes permission. The floor disappears.

The child leans fully into the imagined flight, arms stretched wide in complete commitment to the moment. Beside him, Zoey rides along without question, calm and certain in the middle of the adventure.

I was interested in the seriousness of pretend play. Children rarely approach imagination ironically. For them, belief is immediate and complete. The transformation has already happened.

The structured planes allowed me to simplify the image while still holding onto its emotional weight. The geometry keeps the scene quiet and stable, letting the gesture itself carry the feeling.

The large open space surrounding the figures became important. It acts almost like atmosphere or possibility. The world around them has not fully formed yet, which feels true to imagination itself.

Part of the Architecture of Imagination series.

A small box. A vast departure.
