The Catch

The Catch began with the kind of improbable stories once stacked beside grocery-store registers—tabloid headlines offered with complete confidence and very little supporting evidence.

For a retro exhibition, the idea moved toward the Florida of the 1950s and 60s: faded postcards, bold signs, mermaids, palm trees, turquoise water, and a fisherman who appears entirely pleased with his unusual family.

Joe Patti’s Seafood—part fish market, part Pensacola institution—anchors the painting in a very real place.

The title came later. A catch can be the fish you land, the one that got away, or the person you were lucky enough to find.

Some stories are easy to question. The more believable ones ask a little more of us.
