This self-portrait came during an early stage of my experiments with acrylic paint and geometric planes. I was learning how a face could be built from shapes rather than soft brushwork.
It seemed safest to start with myself rather than risk injuring someone else’s likeness.
An earlier version used only black-and-white skin tones. The result looked alarmingly like a zombie, which suggested color might be a good idea.
Early Study
An early version of the self-portrait explored structure without color. It helped establish the geometric planes that would later shape the final painting.
